Benefits of Support Groups
In recovery, finding reliable sources of sobriety support is essential. Recovery communities provide a social support system, which is especially vital during the first year or two of sobriety. In addition to members giving and receiving recovery support, these settings provide opportunities to establish new sober friendships, as well as chances to serve others.
It is important for the individual in recovery to seek out a support group that is a good fit for them. Here are several recovery communities to consider:
Support Group FAQ
12 Step
The 12 Step program of Alcoholics Anonymous has the largest network of recovery meetings, which are available most hours of the day in metropolitan regions worldwide. The Twelve Steps are a recovery blueprint created by the founders of A.A. in the 1930s, and have helped many people reach their recovery goals. A.A. is a nondenominational fellowship of people from all walks of life who gather together to share their personal experiences and offer each other support.
SMART Recovery
Self-Management and Recovery Training (SMART) is an individual-centered approach to maintaining sobriety, versus a spiritual approach. It is built on a four-part recovery model and places the emphasis on self-empowerment. The focus of SMART Recovery is on gaining control over the compulsive behaviors, and teaches techniques to help reach those goals.
Refugee Recovery
Refuge Recovery is a recovery approach that is based on the Buddhist tradition, integrating the Four Noble Truths and the Eightfold Path. At the heart of Refuge Recovery is the use of mindfulness meditation, as well as an emphasis on wise actions, compassion, and positive living to help overcome addiction.
Celebrate Recovery
Celebrate Recovery is a biblically based recovery program that was founded at Saddleback Church in 1991. Celebrate Recovery integrates the 12 steps of A.A. and the eight Christian Beatitudes. Celebrate Recovery features various models, including individual mentors, large group meetings, and small groups of “accountability partners.”
